  • PERT Practice Tests are an ideal way to prepare for Florida's common placement test otherwise known as the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT). The PERT exam is used to place a college student in the appropriate course based on their academic skills and abilities. The PERT test includes sections on mathematics, reading, and writing.

The PERT test is given to public high school students in Florida to determine their readiness for Freshman Composition I (ENC 1101) and Intermediate Algebra (MAT 1033).  Depending on a student's score, they may be placed into developmental education courses in math, reading, and/or writing.

Our free PERT practice tests and study resources are listed below.  Taking sample questions is an effective way to study for your college placement exam.

Our free PERT sample tests provide you with an opportunity to assess how well you are prepared for the actual PERT exam, and then concentrate on the areas you need work on.

    PERT Practice Test Benefits

There are many benefits of preparing for your PERT exam with practice tests.  Studying for your PERT test using sample questions is one of the most effective study practices you can use.  The advantages of using sample PERT tests include:

    • Improving Your Problem Solving Abilities - To do well on the PERT exam, especially the math section, you need to be able to solve problems. As you practice with our sample questions, and review the provided explanations, you will increase your ability to solve problems.
    • Mastering the Test Format - Standardized exams, like the PERT, have their own particular test formats.  The best way to become familiar with the test format is to take practice exams. By understanding the PERT test format you will have no surprises on test day!
    • Concentrating Your Study - Many students waste a lot of valuable study time by reviewing material that they are good at (often because it is easier or makes them feel better). As you take more and more sample tests you begin to get a feel for the topics that you know well and the areas that you are weak on.   The most effective way to study is to concentrate on the areas that you need help on.

    PERT Exam Overview

The PERT exam covers the following areas:

    Mathematics
The PERT math test includes word problems using real-world situations. There are approximately 25 questions on the PERT placement test and 5 items on the diagnostic tests. Students are presented problems that includes diagrams, charts, graphs, and tables.  Calculators are not allowed on the exam but the ability to use an online calculator is available for certain test questions.  The topics on the math test includes:

    • linear equations, linear inequalities, literal equation, and quadratic formulas
    • simultaneous linear equations with two variables
    • evaluating algebraic expressions
    • translating between lines and inspecting equations on coordinate planes
    • dividing by binomials and monomials
    • adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, simplifying and factoring polynomials

    Reading

The PERT reading exam measures the student's ability to understand information presented in reading passages. The reading passages may include excerpts from: novels, short stories, newspapers, magazines, poetry, drama, and business documents.  Questions are multiple-choice and there are approximately 25 questions on the placement test and 5 on the diagnostic test.  The content covered in the reading test includes:

    • determining and summarizing the main theme, ideas, information, or events
    • supporting and/or disputing points made about the passages
    • understanding the meanings of phrases
    • evaluating the structure, tone, meanings, and word choices
    • figuring out the author's purpose
    • interpreting relationship between sentences
    • recognizing the differences between facts and opinions

    Writing
The PERT writing exam measures how well a student can identify and correct errors in written text.  Errors will include sentence structure, usage, mechanics, and organization.  Similar to the reading exam, the questions are multiple choice and there are approximately 25 questions on the placement test and 5 on the diagnostic test. Topics include:

    • recognizing incorrect shifts in verb tense and pronouns
    • utilizing proper adjectives, adverbs, and case forms
    • using sentence modifiers correctly
    • determining proper parallel structures
    • evaluating and maintaining style and tone
    • applying appropriate grammar, usage, and mechanics according to standard written English
    • evaluating data, conclusions, and opinions of others

Who needs to take the PERT and Exemptions

All incoming college students in Florida are required to take the PERT in 11th grade unless they are exempt.  The most common PERT exemptions are granted for:

    • Scoring a level 2 or 3 on the FCAT reading
    • Scoring a level 2,3, or 4 on the FACT mathematiccs
    • ACT Scores - scoring higher than a 18 in reading, 17 in english, and 19 in math.
    • SAT Scores - scoring higher than a 440 in verbal and 440 in math.
    • Accuplacer Scores - scoring higher than a 72 in elementary algebra, 83 in reading, and 83 in sentence skills.

    PERT Scores

Each of the PERT subject tests are scored independently. The scores range from 50 to 150. Student's can't fail the PERT - the scores are used to determine what courses they should take in college. Students must meet certain "cut" scores in each subject test in order to not be required to take developmental education or accelerated intervention coursework.  The cut scores are listed below:

    Mathematics

    • Lower Level Developmental Education: Scores from 50 to 95
    • Higher Level Developmental Education: Scores from 96 to 112
    • Intermediate Algebra (MAT 1033): Scores from 113 to 122
    • College Algebra or higher (MAC 1105): Scores from 123 to 150

    Reading

    • Lower Level Developmental Education: Scores from 50 to 83
    • Higher Level Developmental Education: Scores from 84 to 103
    • Freshman Composition Skills I (ENC 1101): Scores from 104 to 150

    Writing

    • Lower Level Developmental Education: Scores from 50 to 89
    • Higher Level Developmental Education: Scores from 90 to 98
    • Freshman Composition Skills I (ENC 1101): Scores from 99 to 150
